The IES No. 11 of Alicante was created on July 29 (DOGV/BOE – August 31, 1994) of 1994 and was provisionally located in the La Aneja building, while the new building was being built. The School Council of IES No. 11 of Alicante approved to request, in a session held on January 21, 2004, the name “Doctor Balmis”.
Francisco Javier Balmis Berenguer (1753-1819) was born in Alicante and dedicated his life to medicine. He was appointed by Charles IV director of the Royal Philanthropic Vaccine Expedition on July 2, 1803, being the first mass vaccination in history and the beginning of the eradication of smallpox. This expedition traveled through Latin America, the Philippines, Canton and Macao, with 22 children from the Foundling School of A Coruña and their nurse Isabel López Sedalla, who transported the vaccine: every week two of them were injected into the arms of the pustules. of those inoculated the previous week. After successfully completing its mission, the expedition returned to Spain in September 1806. The choice of this name by the center is due to the fair recognition that our Institute wants to give to this famous man from Alicante.
